Spuffy

This is a long shot, but I'm hoping that somebody can help me.  I can't remember anything about this Spuffy story--plot, author, nothing--except for one line: something like, "Spike was the kind of person who gained confidence with each article of clothing shed."  For some reason, I haven't been able to get that line out of my head, and I remember that this story was particularly well-written.  Is this ringing any bells?  Many thanks in advance!
