I don't know what season it is in but Spike and Buffy are sent to the past and where vampire's and humans intermingle without realizing it. Buffy has lost her memory and becomes best friends with on of the vampires and when she remembers she flips out before getting over it and continuing the friendship.

I think they went through a portal or something and they had to wait for it to come back to them. But buy then they had created a family, an inner sanctum of vampires and humans that when they got back to the future waited for them to take back control of the family.
