Cannot remember a classic

Apparently I've read too much fic or I've a mind like a sieve.....I cannot remember the name or author of an older story (much older, the series was still on).

Spike leaves to get his soul and asks for it so "she can get what she deserves". He comes back mean and nasty trying to destroy Buffy ... seems the demon in the cave had a different idea of what Buffy deserved than Spike did and gave him someone elses soul not William. Yada yada they find out what's wrong and fix it.

Anyone???? Bueller??????
