Cannot remember a classic

Apparently I've read too much fic or I've a mind like a sieve.....I cannot remember the name or author of an older story (much older, the series was still on).

Spike leaves to get his soul and asks for it so "she can get what she deserves". He comes back mean and nasty trying to destroy Buffy ... seems the demon in the cave had a different idea of what Buffy deserved than Spike did and gave him someone elses soul not William. Yada yada they find out what's wrong and fix it.

Anyone???? Bueller??????

Oh, I totally remember that story! Spike was only in charge when his demon was out. No idea, of course, about the title or author. *sigh* Maybe it was on AAS? I think that's where I was mostly reading back in the day...

Yup yup yup! I used to read AAS all the time (miss it being updated). I may have first read it there. I remembered the scene where Spike saved her from himself when he let the demon out...really nicely done in a short story.

But they destroyed Spike's demon soul (*quote* He thinks that the demon reached into hell for Spike's new soul.) in this story.
