Spike's a champion

Looking for two different fictions (I think) where Spike returns as a champion.

1) Xander thinks that Spike is still a vampire and comes to his apartment and shoots him with a crossbow or stakes him.

2) Spike returns with supernatural powers, some sort of guardian or something like that. He chastises Giles and company for using magic without thinking of what will need to be repaid in balance.

Either of these sound familiar? Thanks --

Oh,it's not When Tables Turn -- though I've read that one before and really, really like it! It's probably one of the stories that gave me a hankering for this Spike as a champion thing to begin with!

I think that(perhaps)the one I'm trying to find took place post-Grave. That when being given the soul he was given this whole other agenda and responsibility as well. And, of course, the Scoobies aren't all that happy about taking any advice from Spike. I seem to recall him going on about how when you use magic there is always a price. That if you ask some little glowey creatures to create light for you in a dark tunnel, they are going to want something in return. So, even though he can do all this powerful magic, he for the most part resists.
