I remember  a story where Spike is hanging on the cross and than the cross shatters. Angelus was hurting Buffy or Xander I believe and Spike asks for forgiveness from TPTB or God and is granted it while he was chained or nailed to the cross

That sounds like DarkEyedSeer fic, This is the Way the World Ends, beginning with Spike and Tara traveling together. The cross scene is when Angelus nails him to a cross and Spike humbles himself by asking for help from above to help his friends, the cross shatters and sunlight doesn't burn him.
