I can remember reading a long fic, Spike/Xander. Xander leaves the bus after the end of the series because he's freaking out about Anya being gone and just takes off. Some time later he finds Spike working at a grungy convenience store (I believe actually working as the owner's plaything). Eventually Xander gets some kind of power.

I think you're talking about Payless by Metaforgirl. It fits your description, mostly. Human Spike is a mechanic, though.
