I've just been re-reading 'Change Partners & Dance' which reminded me of another fic that I can't think of any other details except that Spike meets Buffy at about the same time period (season 1, I think), and pretends that he has a soul (but he's still fairly evil, he just does it... for laughs? so she doesn't stake him?... don't remember). I just remember in that scene that he tells her he's just totally laughing internally at the this, and with great pomp exclaims that he has the soul & wants redemption or something.
