Something spikeylover said recently tickled a memory and she recommended asking here...

I can't for the life of me remember the title or author of this fic: It takes place post-Season 6 of BtVS (and post-Season 7, sort of). Spike wore the amulet and burned up closing the Hellmouth, just like in "Chosen," and wakes up in the cave in Africa. The entire season was actually all part of his trials and didn't actually happen and, unfortunately, I don't remember what happened after that.

Ringing any bells?

Hmm. That sounds like the beginning of my series Possession (http://www.angelfire.com/cantina/shadowlass/possession.html): Spike wakes up, post-Chosen burning, in the cave in Africa, the demon's there, he explains that the whole thing was just a continuation of Spike's trials, and the story goes on from there. In my story, though, season seven actually did happen--it was just part of the trial--so I'm not sure if it's the same fic.

You know, that might just be it! I'd had my memory jogged about the opening scene, but really couldn't remember anything else... so my brain may have filled in the blanks a bit.

But squee!!! I think I'd only read about the first eight or nine chapters of that one before losing track of it! Are you still working on it? I hadn't realized it was a WIP until I got to end of chapter 21 just a few minutes ago...
